Christopher Curtis

Known for his contemporary work in stone and metal, Christopher Curtis has been creating sculptures for more than fifty years.

He frequently fuses stone and metal in his artwork, creating a synergistic relationship between the two disparate materials: natural and manmade - ancient and modern. This tension between form and time is fundamental to his aesthetic as an artist.

Curtis’ affection for stone started as a young boy collecting rocks in the woods of Vermont. Over the decades, his fascination expanded from pebbles to cobbles to large boulders.

In his art, Curtis prefers to use natural boulders over quarried stone. His sculpture often invites the viewer to see the world from a new vantage point, directing their vision through a negative space that he has created in the original stone.

Most recently, Curtis has been creating large works in stainless and Corten steel. They range from the completely abstract to others, which, in their abstraction, present the essence of human interactions. His sculptures often depict abstract anthropomorphic figures that hint at the intimate connection of couples or friends.
