George-Ann DeVilbiss Gowan was born in Corpus Christi, Texas in 1948. Her initial art training was at William and Mary, from which she graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Fine Art. In Connecticut, her residence since 1970, she pursued further studies with watercolorist Edgar Whitney and egg tempera artist Richard Carroll. She has also worked extensively with Russian artist Yuri Vaschenko since 1995. Until it closed in 2010 she was represented by the Bachelier Cardonsky Gallery, Kent, CT. She has shown her work at The Howland Cultural Center in Beacon, NY and the Akin Free Library and Museums in Pawling, NY. She has also been a featured artist at Tree’s Place Gallery, Orleans, MA. Most of her work has been primarily in egg tempera and graphite, but recently her focus is turned to bricolage. Her painting won first prize at Silvermine’s 49th Annual Art of the Northeast USA Competition, among numerous other awards. Several of her works are included in Charles Ewing’s book, The New Scratchboard, Clay-Surface Techniques for Today’s Artists (Watson Guptill, 2001) and her work has been reviewed in Art New England. Two of her graphite drawings were selected by the United States Department of State ART in Embassies Program to hang in the official residence of the US Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan. George-Ann lives and works in Kent, Connecticut.
